Alex - It is unfortunate that customers have to use threats to get what should be voluntarily offered by the business.

Matthew- you're right on the money: empowered employees save sales and can significantly improve the customer experience.

The main problem behind the entire interaction is that the management has not empowered its employees. Plain and simple. Had the management done so there would have been no more than a blink between when you mentioned the price difference and the cashier doing an override.

A friend of mine had a similar experience on Macy's Black Friday sale. Their sale ended at noon, but he was there at one, and huge signs were up all over the place.

He was a bit more direct to the extent of telling them that they would honor the price, or not have his business anymore, but they did so without complaint.
